Rosso Piceno Superiore
Rozzano: Piceno in a glass!
Where to start? Always from the beginning!
At the base of every wine, regardless of denomination, there are always one or more grape varieties.
At the base of every wine, regardless of denomination, there are always one or more grape varieties.
The protagonists of our story are two: Montepulciano and Sangiovese, the most significant vines of Central Italy.
Montepulciano
Montepulciano is an "Adriatic" vine, whose most characteristic production develops from the north of Molise, to continue in Abruzzo and end in the Marche. The "Mediterranean" character of the area is attenuated by the proximity of the Balkan area, a source of colder air masses in winter and by the effects of the inland and shallow Adriatic Sea, the coldest of the seas in the Mediterranean basin.
Sangiovese
Sangiovese is a characteristic vine of Central Italy, whose best expressions are found in Tuscany, Umbria, Romanga and Marche. The vagueness of its origins, disputed between Romagna and Tuscany, gives the vine a mythical aura and brings us back through its name to blood and its symbols, such as sacrifice to the divinity: Sangiovese or blood of Jupiter (sanguis Jovis). Other Tuscan and Corsican sources instead support the origin from "sangiovannese" (San Giovanni) due to its rather early ripening period.
Small historical premise:
The world of wine as we know it today is the result of a trend reversal aimed at increasing attention to quality, which began in the 1960s and more precisely in 1966, the year in which the DOCs were established.
The denominations of origin are certifications issued for a specific wine, with which a body in charge guarantees that the wine satisfies the minimum requirements in terms of quality established by the disciplinary of that specific denomination.
As in any self-respecting story, even in our case we have to "account with the innkeeper", i.e. the Disciplinary, a real instruction manual that defines the limits of the production areas, the vines that can compete to create denomination, yield per hectare and minimum ageing.
From a cultural and economic point of view, the main purpose of these tools is to link the products to their territories of origin. The link of the productions to the territory allows the promotion of both these resources at the same time.
With one wine, you get the best of both worlds!
Piceno red
Rosso Piceno, a wine which by regulation can be produced in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Ancona with the exception of the Conero area, is a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese, the cornerstones of the denomination.
It is clear that the production area constitutes an area in which the best expressions of the two vines overlap.
Returning to the protagonists of our story, Montepulciano and Sangiovese, the specification, while imposing their presence, allows us to experiment with percentages:
- Montepulciano can range from 35% to 85%;
- Sangiovese can range from 15% to 50%.
Beyond Montepulciano and Sangiovese
Grapes
In addition to the protagonists of our story, other red grape varieties, non-aromatic, recommended and/or authorized in the Marche Region, can contribute to the production of Rosso Piceno, up to a maximum of 15%.
When the game is hard...
Piceno red Superior
The Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore denomination can be produced exclusively in the territory of 14 municipalities within the province of Ascoli Piceno , in a hilly area overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
The DOC "Rosso Piceno Superiore" wine cannot be released for consumption before 1 November of the year following that of production of the grapes. The area that can be registered is very limited, all contained within the hills of the province of Ascoli Piceno.
Rosso Piceno Superiore specialists since 1970
The first vintage we bottled dates back to 1970 and for more than 50 years we have dedicated ourselves to this denomination in all its facets which we call "Interpretations"
Our interpretations
The possibility of being flexible on the percentages of the main vines in addition to that 15% of international vines made it necessary to put some order.
The passion for our territory and for its most characteristic wine was the basis behind the birth of our "Interpretations";
that is, our vision of a journey of knowledge and tasting of Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore that takes into account and explicitly enhances the different blends of grapes.
Our traditional interpretation
Rozzano
ROZZANO is our TRADITIONAL interpretation of the SUPERIOR Rosso Piceno DOC.
Piceno in a glass , only Montepulciano (85%) and Sangiovese (15%).
It is a wine of surprising elegance because on the palate the first sensation is that of the exuberance of the Montepulciano which fills, and then ends with the reserved personality of the Sangiovese. This explosive start and elegant finish required enormous skill in taming the two personalities in order to obtain an elegant wine that respects food pairings, from the most traditional to the most courageous such as truffles.
This elegance is due to the fact that the Sangiovese is left on racks for about twenty days before being vinified; processing that gives a slightly spicy aftertaste, almost peppery.
Rozzano 2019
Our international interpretation
Velvety
VELVET is our INTERNATIONAL interpretation of Rosso Piceno DOC SUPERIORE.
International because the specification provides that 15% of non-aromatic red grape varieties not prohibited for cultivation in the Marche region can be added to the mandatory blend (Montepulciano and Sangiovese).
This 15% is represented in the VELVET by Cabernet Sauvignon.
The cherry flavor immediately emerges both on the nose and on the palate and maintains a lovable and cheeky elegance; a wine that you drink without worries because it accompanies you and adapts, a wine that you drink with a smile.
